Michigan LDS Chapel Mass Shooting: What We Know About the Victims


Grand Blanc Township, Michigan — On Sunday, September 28, 2025, a tragic attack unfolded at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.

Here is what is known so far about those affected:


Casualties and Injuries

  • Fatalities: Four worshippers lost their lives in the attack.
  • Injured: Eight people were wounded — by gunfire or smoke inhalation.
    • The injured range in age from as young as 6 years old up to 78 years old.
  • In addition, two people were treated for smoke inhalation.

By Monday, following a thorough search of the charred remains, officials confirmed that all victims present were accounted for and no additional bodies were found.


Known Identities

One of the deceased has been publicly identified:

  • John Bond was confirmed by his family as one of the four victims.
    • He was a Navy veteran with nine years of service.
    • His family described him as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather; he enjoyed time with his grandchildren, researching trains, and playing golf.

No other victims’ identities have been made public as of now. Investigators and church leaders have withheld further personal details, out of respect for the families and pending formal confirmations.


Reactions and Context

Church leaders, community members, and public officials have expressed deep sorrow and called for unity during this time of mourning.

Dallin H. Oaks, a leader in the LDS Church, stated:

“We mourn with our members who have lost loved ones, and we join in prayer for comfort … We all seek answers and understanding in the wake of trauma, shock, and grief.”

As the investigation continues, authorities are working to uncover the motive, the full circumstances, and any connection between the attacker’s planning and his choice of target.
